About Dr. Jason Roop

I’m a behavioral scientist, spiritual teacher, and the founder of the Trait-Based Model of Recovery and Prevention—an approach that empowers people by developing strengths, not fixing weaknesses.

But this work isn’t just academic for me. It’s personal.

After 17 years of active addiction, I lost nearly everything—my health, my sense of identity, and at one point, even housing. Recovery wasn’t a return to who I used to be. It was a revelation of who I’d never fully known. Since that time, I’ve devoted my life to transformation—both my own and the kind that’s possible for individuals, communities, and organizations.

I’ve spent the last decade helping people discover that the traits they thought were their flaws may actually be their gifts in disguise. I teach recovery through resilience, leadership through authenticity, and prevention through purpose. This isn’t about symptom management—it’s about identity reclamation.

I currently serve on the Kentucky Opioid Abatement Commission and lead national trainings for behavioral health providers, school districts, and recovery organizations. My work has been featured in national conferences, peer-reviewed publications, and soon, in Scientific Reports—a top 5 academic journal globally.
